Sunday, June 29, 2025 3pm.  Covenanter Cemetery Unveiling ceremony for the headstone of Robert Anderson. 

Robert Anderson was one of the first black men to settle in Monroe County. His farm was north and adjacent to the covenant cemetery. This land is still in his family today.  His slave master was his biological father who traded him out for $500 wagon.  Later he was sold again as a teenager.  After the Civil War, he made his way to Bloomington, Indiana  Please join us for an unveiling ceremony and to honor Mr. Robert Anderson.  

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES AT OPPORTUNITY HOUSE!!  The Opportunity House Thrift Store is in need of volunteers. If you are interested please call 812-336-2443, go online to the Volunteer Network and sign up, or see Sis. Suzanne Faulk. Opportunity House was a project near and dear to our own Sis. Ernestine Winters.  Lets continue the tradition.

Shiloh Missionary Baptist in Terre Haute has invited Pastor Rose and the SBC family to its Homecoming Celebration.  A meal will be served upon arrival.  Please join the celebration if you can.

Friday, May 9, 2025 Deadline Camisha R Sims Nursing Scholarship Applications are now being accepted for the Camisha R. Sims Nursing Scholarship through the Community Foundation of Bloomington/Monroe County.  Applicants must be a resident of Monroe County, enrolled in or will enroll in a nursing program, and demonstrate financial need.  The grant award is for $2000 and the application deadline is May 8, 2025.

Grant Application

The mounting cost of higher education even with substantial financial aid, often limits access for many of our students.  This grant is intended to help students with the purchase of books and educational materials, as those costs also steadily rise.  The grant is administered through Second Baptist Church on an annual basis for a three-year period beginning in 2023.  It is named in honor of the benefactor’s mother, the late Eva M. Thomas, a woman of faith and courage who believed in the power of prayer – and of education.  

The application deadline is March 31, 2025.

In 1976, late folklorist Professor William Wiggins  filmed a religious drama, In the Rapture at Second Baptist Church staged by Mrs Margerine Hatcher and members of the Second Baptist Church Choir.    The original 16mm film is in the Indiana University Archives; however, Folkstreams.net is streaming a converted VHS version of the film on its website to view.  It’s truly wonderful to watch what Rev. Dr. E.D. Butler called “the demonstration of a group using their talents to portray an idea”.
